Remote access fraud

This crime is a rapidly growing form of identity theft whereby scammers take control of your bank account and make unauthorised transactions.

Remote access scams are dangerous and sophisticated. Cybercriminals trick victims into installing apps which grant them full access to their computer or mobile device.

Criminals often use remote access tools such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer to gain control of your device. Once connected, they can steal your personal data, spy on your activities and gain access to your email, banking and social media accounts.

Typically, these scams start with a fake browser pop-up stating your computer is infected with a virus, or via an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from your bank and they need to connect to your device to cancel a fraudulent transaction.

How to protect yourself:

  • Only install software or grant remote access to your computer if the request comes from someone you know and trust, such as a friend or family member. Never do so as a result of an unsolicited call, browser pop-up, or text message.
  • Remember, banks or service providers will never contact you requesting remote access to your device.
  • If you believe your laptop, PC, tablet or mobile phone has been infected with a virus or malware, follow the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) guidance on recovering an infected device. The NCSC provides cyber security guidance and support helping to make the UK the safest place to live and work online. You can find them by visiting https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/.
  • Protect your money by contacting us immediately on a different device from the one the scammer contacted you on.
  • Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via police.uk. If you are in Scotland, please report to Police Scotland directly by calling 101.
